I am nodding my head an emphatic yes
To all that You have for me
-Sara Groves, “Open My Hands”
I love (love!) Sara Groves’ music. She says so eloquently what I feel, and as a friend said, “Isn’t that what we love about great poetry and music?” Yep!
Rare is the song, though, that challenges self-reflection and surrender every time I listen to it. This one does. The rest of the song is great, too, with a theme similar to that of Laura Story’s “Blessings.”
The co-writer, Alli Rogers, writes about this song here, but here’s the quote that inspired her and Sara:
“…but how is this true, when God oftentimes withholds riches and honours and health of body from men, though they walk ever so uprightly; we may therefore know that honours and riches and bodily strength are none of God’s good things;… and the good things of God are chiefly peace of conscience and joy in the Holy Ghost in this life; fruition of God’s presence, and vision of His blessed face in the next, and these good things God never bestows upon the wicked, and never withholds from the godly.”
-Sir Richard Baker
For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.
-Psalm 84:11 (NIV)
